The rapidly growing global demand for high barrier films

Demand for high barrier films for food packaging is growing faster than regular packaging films in almost every part of the world according to a new report from industry consultants, AMI Consulting. It is being driven by several different drivers which vary from region to region: from the sustainability of production to the exclusion of the use of additives and preservatives in the production of such films.

AMI Consulting estimates that 8% of the 20 million tons of flexible films used for food packaging in 2018 were high barrier.

Among various types of high-barrier films for food packaging, 45% of the total global demand in 2018 was for polyethylene, 9% for BOPP films; 36% for BOPET films; 10% - for other types of films.
