Scientists have created edible food packaging films

A group of scientists from Russia and India have created films that consist from natural components. These films are safe for health and dissolves in water in 24 hours almost completely.

The material could be used for fruits, vegetables, poultry, meat and seafood packaging.

The development is based on a polymer from seaweed, sodium alginate. Sodium alginate is registered in the food industry as a food additive E401, and is used as a thickener and stabilizer in food and medicine.

No special equipment is required for the production of a new type of film: if the activity of manufacturers of conventional films complies with the requirements of the standards for food production they can also produce a new type of films on an industrial scale.
